Students learn a new way to use their fingers for counting. This method is based on one used in the Kamba tribe of Kenya, Africa. A short video demonstrates the counting method. Students are asked to practice and show someone else what they have learned. A Kenyan flag is provided for coloring. A map of Kenya is provided for reference. A printable practice sheet is provided for students to complete and put in their folders. The driving investigation for this lesson is awareness of other counting methods and other cultures.

The Heroes unit is a multi-disciplinary set of activites designed to help students understand how media impact and influence our ideas and definitions of public figures. Students investigate how heroes are presented in literature, news, and images. After which, they derive a generally accepted definition of "hero." As a group, students discuss this predetermined definition and add their own thoughts on what heroes are. Working in small groups, elementary students create heroic characters in preset scenarios. Secondary students are given a specific task to accomplish, through which they determine what it takes to be a hero.

This lesson uses email to communicate pieces of a treasure map among groups of "relatives" who can inherit the treasure when the map is completed. Students work in groups following the instructions of the map and learning the skills and etiquette of electronic communications.
