These community profiles explore the unique history
and culture of six New Mexico communities. These communities
were identified by the New Mexico History Resource
Framework task
force as representing the diverse cultures of
New Mexico: Albuquerque’s Barelas neighborhood,
Clovis, Dexter-Hagerman, Española, Gallup,
and Silver City.
During the winter of 2004, task force members invited
educators, community leaders, and local historians
to participate in community dialogs in and about these
six communities. Participants completed the Community
Survey (pdf)
form about community historical resources that, together
with the dialogs, formed the basis for these profiles.
This is a first step in uncovering the wealth of resources
and knowledge available through local traditions and
in homes, historic sites, and organizations. Additional
content from these communities will be used as basis
for this framework and will serve as an integral part
of the study of New Mexico history in the schools. |
